Font licenses & attributions

Every lettering style on this site is built on an openly licensed typeface. We extract the outlines at build time and re-draw them programmatically — the letterforms remain the work of their original designers, and this page credits them properly.

The typefaces behind the styles

Thirteen of the fifteen families are licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1; two are licensed under the Apache License 2.0. Both licenses permit commercial use, embedding in web applications, modification and redistribution — which is what makes a browser-based generator like this one possible.

What the licenses allow

The SIL OFL and Apache 2.0 both allow the fonts to be used, studied, modified and redistributed free of charge — including commercial use and embedding inside web applications. That covers everything this generator does: converting glyph outlines to path data, applying programmatic effects such as inflation, skew and 3D depth, and drawing the result on your device.

One clause matters especially for you: artwork you create with these letterforms is not itself a derivative of the font software. The OFL states this explicitly — the license applies to the font files, not to documents (or images) created using them. So the PNG and SVG you export are yours to use however you like, including commercially.

License texts

The full license texts ship alongside the source fonts and are reproduced at their canonical homes: the official OFL 1.1 text and the Apache License 2.0 text. All typefaces are distributed via Google Fonts, where each family page lists its copyright holders.
