Graffiti letter N

Two stems and a single diagonal. Three strokes, and the letter is only as good as the consistency between them.

Also known as: the one diagonal

The same skeleton below, drawn in three opposite treatments. Everything that differs is a setting in the generator, not a different letter.

The skeleton

Two verticals, then a diagonal running from the top of the left stem to the bottom of the right. The diagonal’s weight has to match the stems exactly — a thin diagonal in a heavy N is the classic tell of a letter that was assembled rather than drawn.

What happens when you inflate it

The two triangular counters close from the inside out. Because each counter is bounded by a vertical and a sloping edge, they close faster than the counters of H or M. Keep both open, and be willing to thin the diagonal if the N is getting heavy.

What usually goes wrong: Running the diagonal corner to corner. A diagonal that starts at the very top and ends at the very bottom turns the two counters into slivers, and the letter into a Z. Leave a little landing at both ends.

Letters N sits next to

N pairs with A, M and V for the diagonal family, and with I and H for straight-edge pieces. Two Ns in a word usually want one of them to be the lighter of the two, otherwise the piece reads as a fence.

One thing to try

In bubble styles, bow the diagonal outward slightly instead of leaving it straight. The bow turns three separate strokes into one silhouette, which is exactly what the style is for.

How to draw the letter N in four steps

  1. Sketch the skeleton. Two verticals, then a diagonal running from the top of the left stem to the bottom of the right. The diagonal’s weight has to match the stems exactly — a thin diagonal in a heavy N is the classic tell of a letter that was assembled rather than drawn.
  2. Inflate the strokes. The two triangular counters close from the inside out. Because each counter is bounded by a vertical and a sloping edge, they close faster than the counters of H or M. Keep both open, and be willing to thin the diagonal if the N is getting heavy.
  3. Check the neighbors. N pairs with A, M and V for the diagonal family, and with I and H for straight-edge pieces. Two Ns in a word usually want one of them to be the lighter of the two, otherwise the piece reads as a fence.
  4. Add your own twist. In bubble styles, bow the diagonal outward slightly instead of leaving it straight. The bow turns three separate strokes into one silhouette, which is exactly what the style is for.

Questions about the letter N

Why is my graffiti N diagonal too thin?

Because a sloping stroke measures visually lighter than a vertical one at the same width. Draw the diagonal a fraction heavier than the stems and it will read as matching.

Should the diagonal of an N touch the corners?

It should get close but not all the way. Leaving a small landing at the top and bottom keeps both counters open and stops the letter sliding toward a Z.
